What Vedic astrology is
Vedic astrology — jyotish, "the science of light" — is the Indian astrological tradition, and it differs from the Western system in three ways that matter before anything else makes sense.
It uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the fixed stars, where Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac anchored to the seasons. The two have drifted about 24 degrees apart — nearly a full sign — which is why your Vedic Sun sign is usually one earlier than the one you already know. It reads the Moon sign as primary rather than the Sun sign, which is why every Indian rashifal is written for the Moon. And it times events through dasha periods, a planetary schedule set at your birth that has no Western equivalent.
How the pieces fit together
A kundli is one diagram holding several separate measurements. The ascendant sets the house framework. The nine grahas sit in signs and houses, and their condition — dignity, retrograde, combustion — shapes how each expresses itself. The 27 nakshatras give a finer grid than the twelve rashis, which is why matchmaking and dasha both run off them. Divisional charts slice each sign again for a specific department of life.
On top of that structure sit the patterns: doshas that classical texts flag as friction, yogas that combine placements into something greater, and transits that activate them. Remedies — gemstones, rudraksha, Lal Kitab upay — are what the tradition prescribes in response.

How Astroly computes all of this
Every chart on this site is computed from the Swiss Ephemeris, on the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri ayanamsa and whole-sign houses — the settings most Indian astrologers work from. Birth times are converted using the timezone of the birthplace, not the viewer's. Every calculator page states the assumptions it inherits, and where a tradition genuinely disagrees with itself — the D60 counting rule, whether Y is a vowel in numerology — the page says so rather than presenting one school's answer as the only one.
Astrology is a traditional interpretive system, not a demonstrated science. The astronomy underneath it is real and precisely calculated; the interpretations describe what the tradition holds. What is Vedic astrology?

What is the difference between Vedic and Western astrology?
The zodiacs are offset by roughly 24 degrees, so your Vedic Sun sign is usually one sign earlier. Vedic astrology also weights the Moon sign and ascendant far more heavily, uses whole-sign houses, and has the Vimshottari dasha system, which Western astrology has no equivalent for.
Do I need my exact birth time?
It depends what you are looking up. The ascendant, houses, dasha and divisional charts all need an accurate time. The Moon sign and nakshatra are usually settled by the date alone. Numerology needs no time at all.
Is astrology scientifically proven?
No. The calculations are genuine astronomy, but the interpretations are not scientifically demonstrated. Everything here describes what the tradition holds rather than asserting proven fact.
