How it works
The Sun takes about 365 days to circle the zodiac, so it holds one sign for roughly a month and your birth date is almost always enough. The tool computes the Sun's sidereal longitude — its tropical position minus the Lahiri ayanamsa, currently around 24 degrees — and names the rashi it lands in.
Step by step
- Birth details are converted to Universal Time.
- The Swiss Ephemeris gives the Sun's tropical longitude.
- The Lahiri ayanamsa for that date — currently around 24° and growing about a degree every 72 years — is subtracted.
- The sidereal longitude is divided by 30 to give the rashi.
A worked example
Input: 15 August 1995, 07:12, Delhi
- Sun's tropical longitude → 141.79° (that is Leo in Western terms)
- Minus Lahiri ayanamsa 23.80° → 117.99°
- 117.99° ÷ 30 = sign 3, remainder 27.99°
Result: Karka (Cancer) — one sign earlier than the Western Leo, which is exactly what the ayanamsa gap produces.
How to read your result
- Expect a different answer from Western astrology
- Western astrology anchors 0° Aries to the spring equinox; Vedic astrology anchors it to the stars. The two anchors have drifted about 24° apart, which is most of a sign. A late-Leo Western Sun is usually an early-Leo or late-Cancer Vedic Sun.
- Neither system is wrong
- They are different measurement conventions, and each tradition's interpretations were built around its own. Read Vedic material with this sign and Western material with the tropical one.
- The Sun's role in a Vedic chart
- It signifies soul, vitality, father and authority. Those topics matter — but daily prediction, dasha and matching all run off the Moon, so this is not the sign to look up a rashifal under.
What changes the answer
- The Sun holds a sign for about a month, so your birth date almost always settles it without a time.
