Remedial astrology is the part of the tradition that proposes doing something about what a chart shows. It is also the part most exposed to commercial pressure, so it is worth setting out plainly what the classical position actually is.
Remedies are prescribed for a planet, not for a sign or a month. That is the core difference between a Vedic gemstone and a Western birthstone: the birthstone comes from a calendar table, while the gemstone here is derived from the lord of your ascendant, which means it depends on your birth time and place. Different schools choose the lord of a different house depending on what the wearer wants to support — a legitimate variation, not a contradiction.
The classical remedy set is broader and cheaper than the market suggests: mantra, charity, fasting, and service associated with the graha, alongside gemstones. Texts do specify carat weight by body weight and insist on untreated stones, which is why properly certified ones are expensive — but the non-gem remedies cost nothing. None of this is a demonstrated effect; it is what the tradition prescribes, and it should be read that way.
