Where a birth chart describes a fixed pattern set at your birth minute, a transit is a live measurement: Saturn is in one sign right now, Jupiter in another, and the reading comes from where each sits relative to your own natal positions — almost always counted from your Moon sign rather than your Sun.
Speed decides which transits get attention. The Moon changes sign every two and a quarter days and is read for mood and daily timing. Saturn takes about two and a half years per sign, Jupiter about one, and Rahu and Ketu around eighteen months moving backwards — which is why those four carry the transits people actually plan around. Sade Sati is simply Saturn crossing the three signs centred on your natal Moon.
Transits are read alongside the running dasha, never instead of it. The classical position is that a dasha opens a door and a transit decides when you walk through it — a hard transit during a supportive dasha reads very differently from the same transit during a difficult one. Should transits be read from the Moon sign or the ascendant?
Most Indian practice reads transits from the natal Moon sign, which is why Sade Sati is defined against the Moon. Some astrologers also check from the ascendant as a second view. Reading from the Sun sign, as Western columns do, gives a different and generally less used result.

The slow ones. Saturn holds a sign for about two and a half years, Jupiter for about one, and the nodes for around eighteen months. Fast movers like the Moon and Mercury change too quickly to plan around.
What does a retrograde transit mean?
The planet appears to move backwards from Earth for a period. Classical texts read a retrograde transiting planet as revisiting rather than advancing — old matters resurfacing rather than new ones starting. Saturn and Jupiter both retrograde for several months every year, so it is routine rather than exceptional.
Do transits override the birth chart?
No. A transit can only activate what the birth chart already contains. That is the classical position, and it is why a reading starts from the chart and uses transits for timing.
