Rashi Calculator (Moon Sign)

Find your Rashi — the sign the Moon occupied when you were born. When an Indian astrologer, a rashifal column or a matchmaker asks for "your rashi", this is the number they mean. It is not your sun sign, and the two are different for roughly eleven months out of twelve.

What this calculator works out

Your Moon sign
The rashi the Moon occupied at your birth — what "your rashi" means in ordinary Indian usage.
The Moon's degree
Its exact position within the sign, which settles borderline cases where the Moon changed signs on your birth date.
Nakshatra and pada
The finer 27-fold and 108-fold divisions the Moon falls in, which drive naming and dasha.
Rashi lord and element
The planet ruling your Moon sign, and whether it is a fire, earth, air or water rashi.

How it works

The Moon crosses the whole zodiac in about 27.3 days, spending roughly two and a quarter days in each rashi. Because it moves so much faster than the Sun, your birth date alone is usually enough to place it — but a birth near a sign boundary needs the time to resolve. This tool reads the Moon's sidereal longitude at your birth moment and names the rashi it falls in.

Step by step

  1. Your birth details are converted to Universal Time using the birth city's timezone.
  2. The Swiss Ephemeris gives the Moon's tropical longitude at that instant.
  3. The Lahiri ayanamsa is subtracted to get the sidereal longitude.
  4. Dividing by 30 gives the rashi; the remainder gives the degree within it.
  5. The same longitude divided by 13°20' gives the nakshatra, and by 3°20' the pada.

A worked example

Input: 15 August 1995, 07:12, Delhi

  1. Moon's tropical longitude → 16.96°
  2. Minus Lahiri ayanamsa 23.80° → 353.16° (wrapping past 0°)
  3. 353.16° ÷ 30 = sign 11, remainder 23.16°
  4. 353.16° ÷ 13.333° = nakshatra 26

Result: Meena (Pisces) rashi at 23.16°, nakshatra Revati, ruled by Jupiter.

How to read your result

Why the Moon and not the Sun
Vedic astrology assigns the Moon to mind, emotion and lived daily experience — which is what predictive work deals with. The Vimshottari dasha that times events is also built from the Moon's nakshatra, so the Moon sign is structurally central in a way the Sun sign simply is not.
Reading a rashifal
Any Indian daily or weekly rashifal is written for the Moon sign. Reading one under your Sun sign is the single most common mistake people make, and it produces a reading meant for someone else.
Rashi versus nakshatra
The rashi is the broad 12-fold division and the nakshatra the finer 27-fold one. Matchmaking uses both; the nakshatra carries more of the compatibility score.

What changes the answer

  • The Moon crosses one rashi in roughly 54 hours, so most birth dates settle it without a birth time.
  • If you were born on a day the Moon changed signs, only the time resolves which side you fall on — worth entering it.
  • The Moon moves about half a degree an hour, so the pada is far more time-sensitive than the sign.
  • A tropical (Western) Moon sign will usually be one sign later than this sidereal one.

Frequently asked questions

What is a rashi?

Rashi is the Sanskrit term for a zodiac sign, and in everyday Indian usage "your rashi" means your Moon sign specifically — the sign the Moon was passing through at your birth.

Why does Indian astrology use the Moon sign instead of the Sun sign?

Vedic astrology treats the Moon as the significator of mind, emotion and daily experience, which is what predictive work deals with. The Vimshottari dasha system that times events is also built from the Moon's nakshatra, so the Moon sign is structurally central in a way the Sun sign is not.

My rashi here does not match my newspaper horoscope. Why?

Two reasons, and usually both. Newspaper columns are normally sun-sign based, and Western columns use the tropical zodiac while this uses the sidereal one. A sidereal Moon sign and a tropical Sun sign are different measurements of different bodies — they were never going to agree.

Do I need my birth time for this?

Usually not, but sometimes. The Moon stays in a sign for about 54 hours, so most birth dates give an unambiguous answer. If you were born on a day the Moon changed signs, only the time can tell you which side you fall on — so entering it is worthwhile.

What is the name syllable associated with my rashi?

Traditionally a child is named with a syllable drawn from the pada of their birth nakshatra, which sits inside the rashi. The nakshatra calculator gives you the pada, which is the level that actually determines the syllable.

Is rashi the same as nakshatra?

No. The zodiac is split twelve ways into rashis and twenty-seven ways into nakshatras, so a nakshatra is the finer division. Your Moon sits in exactly one of each, and matchmaking uses both.
