Three things are examined: which sign occupies it, where its lord sits, and which planets aspect or occupy it. A 10th lord placed in the 6th, for instance, is read differently from one placed in the 9th — the first suggests service and daily grind, the second guidance and teaching.
Two supporting houses matter almost as much. The 6th is read for employment, service and competition, and the 2nd for earnings from that work. Astrologers also weigh the Amatyakaraka, the chara karaka associated with profession, and check the D10 dashamsha — the divisional chart specifically assigned to career, and the one that often explains why a promising 10th house has not delivered.
Timing comes from the dasha, not the chart. The chart describes the shape of a working life; the dasha says when a particular part of it becomes active. It is also worth being honest about the limit here: traditional astrology describes tendencies and timing, and no classical text gives a formula that names a job title or a salary.
