The Lo Shu grid is a three by three square with a fixed arrangement of the numbers one to nine. Your date of birth is written onto it digit by digit, and the reading comes from what lands where — which numbers repeat, which never appear, and which rows or columns fill completely.

How it works
Every digit of the date of birth is placed in its own cell; zeros are dropped, as the grid has no zero. A digit appearing more than once strengthens that cell. Rows, columns and diagonals form named planes — mind, emotional, practical and so on — and a plane with all three of its numbers present is read as complete.
Step by step
- Write out the full date of birth as digits: day, month and year.
- Discard the zeros — the classical grid holds 1 to 9 and has no cell for zero.
- Place each remaining digit into its fixed cell in the magic square.
- Count repetitions per cell, note which cells stay empty, and check which of the six planes are complete.
A worked example
Input: 14 July 1993
- Digits: 1, 4, 0, 7, 1, 9, 9, 3
- Drop the zero → 1, 4, 7, 1, 9, 9, 3 — seven digits placed
- 1 appears twice and 9 appears twice; 2, 5, 6 and 8 never appear
Result: A grid with two strengthened cells and four empty ones — an ordinary result, since eight digits cannot fill nine cells.
How to read your result
- Missing numbers are normal
- A date has at most eight digits and the grid has nine cells, so gaps are arithmetically unavoidable. They are read as areas that must be built deliberately rather than as defects.
- Repetition intensifies rather than improves
- A repeated digit strengthens whatever that cell signifies. Three or more of the same digit is usually discussed as excess rather than as strength.
- Planes matter more than single cells
- A complete row, column or diagonal is read as a faculty that works as a whole — mind, emotion, or practical action — which is why the grid is read as a shape rather than as nine separate scores.
What changes the answer
- The grid layout itself never changes; only which cells your date fills.
- Zeros are always dropped, across every version of the method.
- This is Chinese in origin and separate from Indian ank jyotish, which works from reduced digits and ruling planets.
- A four-digit year fills the grid differently from a two-digit one; always use the full year.
Frequently asked questions
What does a missing number mean?
It is read as an area that does not come naturally and has to be built deliberately. Missing numbers are extremely common — most dates of birth cannot possibly cover all nine cells, since a date has only eight digits.
Is a repeated number good or bad?
Neither on its own. A repeat intensifies whatever that cell signifies, which reads as strength in some contexts and excess in others. Three or more of the same digit is usually discussed as the latter.
