How it works
The Atmakaraka is identified first, then placed in the dwadashamsa (D12) chart, and the twelfth sign from that placement is read. The twelfth is the house of moksha, which is why this particular derivation is used for it. The sign then maps to its traditionally associated deities.
Step by step
- The eight chara karakas are computed and the Atmakaraka identified.
- That planet's longitude is mapped into the dwadashamsa (D12) chart, which divides each sign into twelve parts of 2°30' each.
- The twelfth sign from that D12 placement is taken — the twelfth being the house of moksha and surrender.
- That sign maps to the deities the tradition associates with it.

Input: Atmakaraka is Mercury, sitting in the D12 sign of Taurus
- Atmakaraka = Mercury
- Mercury's D12 sign = Taurus
- 12th from Taurus = Aries

How to read your result
- Schools genuinely differ
- Some read the twelfth from the Atmakaraka in D12, as this page does. Others read the Karakamsa, or the Atmakaraka's own D12 sign. A different site giving a different deity is usually a different method, not a mistake.
- Ishta Devata and Kula Devata are separate
- Kula Devata is inherited through the family line; Ishta Devata is read from the chart. Traditional practice keeps both, and where they coincide that is taken as confirmation.
- Why the twelfth house
- It is read as the house of moksha, dissolution of the self and surrender — so a significator of liberation is sought from there rather than from a house of worldly matters.
What changes the answer
- The D12 divides each sign into parts of only 2°30', so a small birth-time error can move the Atmakaraka into a neighbouring division and change the answer.
- The whole derivation depends on the Atmakaraka being correct, which in turn depends on Rahu being handled properly in the karaka ranking.
- This is an indication drawn from a chart, not an instruction. Devotional practice is a personal matter.

Frequently asked questions
Why do different websites give me a different deity?
Because the schools genuinely disagree on the derivation. Some read the twelfth from the Atmakaraka in D12, as this page does; others read the Karakamsa, or the AK’s own D12 sign. We state our method on the result so you can tell which reading you are looking at.
Does this replace the deity my family worships?
No, and it is not meant to. Kula Devata is inherited through the family and Ishta Devata is read from the chart. Traditional practice keeps both, and where they coincide that is simply taken as confirmation.
Why does the twelfth house decide this?
The twelfth is read as the house of moksha, loss of the self, and surrender. A significator of liberation is therefore looked for from there rather than from a house of worldly affairs.
How accurate does my birth time need to be?
Quite accurate. The D12 divides each sign into twelve parts of two and a half degrees each, so a small error in birth time can move the Atmakaraka into a neighbouring division and change the answer.
