In Jaimini astrology the grahas are ranked not by sign but by how far each has travelled into its sign. The one furthest along is the Atmakaraka, read as the theme the soul is working on in this life; the Darakaraka signifies the spouse. This page computes all eight.

How it works
Each graha’s longitude is reduced to its degree within its own sign, from 0 to 30. They are then ranked highest to lowest and assigned the eight karaka roles in fixed order. Rahu is measured in reverse — thirty minus its degree — because it moves retrograde. Ketu is excluded, as the classical eight-karaka scheme does.
Step by step
- Each graha's sidereal longitude is reduced modulo 30 to give its degree within its own sign.
- Rahu's figure is inverted — 30 minus its degree — because it moves retrograde through the zodiac.
- Ketu is excluded, as the classical eight-karaka scheme does.
- The eight are sorted by that advancement, highest first.
- The fixed sequence of karaka roles is assigned in that order: highest is the Atmakaraka, lowest of the eight is the Darakaraka.
A worked example
Input: A chart where Mercury sits at 28°40' Cancer and Venus at 3°10' Leo
- Mercury: 28°40' into its sign
- Venus: 3°10' into its sign
- Mercury is further advanced, so Mercury ranks above Venus
Result: The sign a planet occupies is irrelevant to this ranking. Only how far into it the planet has travelled matters.
How to read your result
- The Atmakaraka outranks the ascendant lord
- In Jaimini practice it is the strongest single significator in the chart — the theme that keeps returning until it is dealt with. This is a genuine departure from Parashari method, where the ascendant lord leads.
- Darakaraka is not the seventh house
- The seventh house is the Parashari significator of marriage; Darakaraka is the Jaimini one. Careful readings consult both, and treat disagreement between them as information rather than error.
- Rahu is why calculators disagree
- Some tools use a seven-planet scheme without Rahu; others include it but forget to reverse it. Either produces a different Atmakaraka for a large share of charts.
What changes the answer
- This needs a more accurate birth time than most calculations — two planets a fraction of a degree apart can swap roles over a few minutes.
- Because the ranking is by degree, a chart can have its Atmakaraka in any sign and any house.
- The karakas are usually read alongside the Karakamsa, which places the Atmakaraka into the navamsa.
- Jaimini and Parashari are separate systems with separate rules; mixing their conclusions without care produces contradictions.

What does the Atmakaraka actually tell me?
It is read as the strongest single significator in the chart — the planet whose themes recur through a life until they are dealt with. Jaimini treats it as more important than the ascendant lord, which is a real departure from Parashari practice.
Why does my Atmakaraka change on other websites?
Almost always because of Rahu. Some tools use a seven-planet scheme that leaves Rahu out; others include it but forget to measure it in reverse. Both produce a different top planet for a large share of charts. This page includes Rahu and reverses it.
