How it works
Transit positions are computed for this moment, sidereally, and refresh every time the page is loaded — the timestamp on the result says exactly when. They are then read from your janam rashi, because gochar in Indian practice is counted from the Moon sign rather than from the ascendant.
Step by step
- The current UTC moment is taken and converted to a Julian Day.
- Sidereal longitudes for all nine grahas are computed for that instant using the Lahiri ayanamsa.
- Your birth chart is computed separately to find your natal Moon sign.
- The transiting positions are then presented relative to that Moon sign, because gochar in Indian astrology is counted from the janma rashi rather than from the ascendant.

- Pisces is the 12th sign from Aries
- Saturn in the 12th from the natal Moon is the opening phase of sade sati
Result: The same transit means something different for every Moon sign — which is exactly why the natal chart is still required.
How to read your result
- Fast and slow grahas do different jobs
- The Moon changes sign every two and a quarter days and is read for mood and timing of small things. Saturn takes about two and a half years per sign and is what long readings are built on.
- Counted from the Moon, not the ascendant
- This is the main divergence from Western transit work. Sade sati, for instance, is defined entirely by Saturn's position relative to the natal Moon.
- A transit is a trigger, not a cause
- Classical practice reads transits as activating what the birth chart and the running dasha already indicate. A transit with nothing to trigger is generally read as passing quietly.

Frequently asked questions
Why is this counted from my Moon sign and not my ascendant?
Because that is the Indian convention for gochar. Sade sati, for instance, is defined as Saturn transiting the twelfth, first and second signs from the natal Moon. Western transit work counts from the ascendant, which is one of the reasons the two systems report different periods.
How often does the answer change?
Continuously. The Moon changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days; Saturn takes about two and a half years. The fast bodies make this page worth reloading, the slow ones are what longer readings are built on.
What does retrograde mean here?
A planet appearing to move backwards against the stars as seen from Earth. It is an apparent effect of relative orbits, not an actual reversal, and classical texts read a retrograde graha as acting on themes already begun rather than starting new ones.
Do I still need my birth details for a transit chart?
Yes, because the transit only means something relative to your own chart. The positions themselves are the same for everybody on Earth at this instant; where they fall for you is not.
